Attention about coated webbing stitching

Though coated webbing doesn’t have much market share in accessory industry now, it becomes more and more popular to waterproof outdoor products. Just as similar as other accessories like webbing or rope, coated webbing should be processed to match the design of the final products. Generally, there are several connect methods such as stitching, riveting and melting for coated webbing. All of these three connect methods are common, especially stitching. After all, stitching is used in various fields such as apparel, home textile, shoes and bags. However, though stitching isn’t the special or new technique, there still some matters need attention when stitching coated webbing.

1. Material

As we know, coated webbing is the nylon or polyester braided webbing outer coated with plastic layer. There is no doubt that nylon or polyester webbing can be sewed easily. But when added the plastic layer, we should concern the materials of plastic. Different types of plastic own different performance and hardness. Nowadays, there are three materials for coated webbing layer: PVC , TPU and silicone. Generally, PVC and silicone coated webbing will be soft while TPU webbing will be harder. So stitching TPU coated webbing will be not as easy as PVC or silicone one.

Besides, the hardness of plastic material also matters. For example, when PVC material is in hardness of 50A, the PVC coated webbing will be much softer and easier to be stitched than that in hardness of 90A.

2. Thickness

Thickness will affect stitching absolutely. Regardless of coated webbing, stitching thick common nylon webbing will must be harder than the thin one. For PVC or silicone coated webbing, that in 2.5 mm thick can be stitched easily. But for TPU coated webbing, that in thickness of 1 mm is suitable for stitching while which in 2.5 mm thick is too hard to sew.

3. Needles

Because of the plastic layer, coated webbing has no wee gap on surface, which is not as nondense as braided webbing. Therefore, stitching coated webbing should concern about needles and sewing machine. That used for sewing fabric can not be used for sewing coated webbing. Generally, we recommend needles and sewing machine that used for leather. After all, coated webbing is similar to leather strap when comes to hardness and thickness. Even some coated webbing owns similar surface with leather strap.
